Organization of Indonesian Researchers in the Netherlands (ORIGIN)
The Indonesian academic community in the Netherlands has been steadily growing, comprising doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and senior scholars across various universities. Despite this presence, researchers often worked individually and were dispersed across multiple cities. This dispersion created challenges in building networks, sharing academic resources, and strengthening collaborative opportunities. Recognizing these needs, a collective initiative was undertaken to establish a dedicated platform for Indonesian researchers. The objective was to create a forum that would facilitate the exchange of knowledge, academic collaboration, mentoring, and both professional and social engagement. This initiative gave rise to the Organization of Indonesian Researchers in the Netherlands (ORIGIN).
HISTORY OF ORIGIN
-
Initial Discussions. Informal conversations began among Indonesian doctoral and postdoctoral researchers about the need for a shared platform. These discussions were held across several universities, including TU Delft, Wageningen University & Research, and the University of Groningen. The outcomes of the initial discussions were consolidated into the concept of forming a formal organization. The primary objectives were to strengthen academic networks, build research collaborations, and provide mutual support among Indonesian researchers in the Netherlands. The initiative received full support from the Education and Cultural Attaché of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in The Hague.
-
The founding team began drafting the vision, mission, and organizational structure. The official identity was chosen under the name: Organization of Indonesian Researchers in The Netherlands (ORIGIN). Preparations were made for the formal launch.
-
ORIGIN was officially inaugurated on Saturday, 2 November 2024, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM CEST. Venue: Boothzaal, Utrecht University Science Park Library. The launch took place during the Indonesian Students’ Congress in the Netherlands.
-
Several of the programs started to run, such as the Establishment of Circles, Collaborations with VOKS Amsterdam Radio, and the Initiation of ORBIT.
-
Hopefully, ORIGIN can operate as an academic and professional platform for Indonesian researchers in the Netherlands. It may serve as a forum for knowledge exchange, mentoring, research networking, and a shared identity space for Indonesian scholars abroad.
Currently, ORIGIN offers 10 scientific Circles to choose from, according to interests and expertise.
